Red Cross Volunteerism in Action
Many volunteers have found that the American Red Cross is just the right setting for them to use their talents and show compassion to people who so desperately need it. The Red Cross depends on volunteers, who constitute 97 percent of our total work force, to carry on our humanitarian work.

Interested in Becoming a Red Cross Volunteer? The Southern Nevada Chapter of the American Red Cross is always looking for new volunteers and the opportunities are endless. The first step to becoming a volunteer with the Red Cross is to fill out our volunteer application online or at our offices. Volunteer Coordinator Melissa Cooper can be reached at at 702-531-0241 or e-mail by clicking here.

Areas Where the Southern Nevada Chapter Needs Your Help

The following are our ongoing volunteer needs:

  • Disaster Relief - Mass care (providing shelters, feeding and distribution of bulk supplies); disaster assessment (collecting, analyzing and disseminating property damage information for the Red Cross); family services (conducting interviews of disaster clients and providing services based upon clients’ needs and disaster assessment).
  • Health and Safety - Teaching, representing the chapter at health and safety fairs, class registrations, data entry and filing.
  • Fundraising/Public Relations/Community Outreach - Special events, attending Red Cross and community functions, donor recognition mailings.
  • General Office Needs - Answering phones, providing directions, copying, filing, data entry.

These are just a few examples of volunteer positions we have available every day! There are other wonderful opportunities for you to participate in Red Cross work!

Volunteering to Satisfy Your Interests and Meet Your Schedule

We hope you’ll consider volunteering for one or more of the areas listed above. If you decide to volunteer, you won’t be going it alone. We’ll train you because it’s important to us that you feel prepared and enjoy working with our organization.

We haven’t forgotten that everyone has numerous demands on their time. We will discuss and listen to you regarding the amount of volunteer time that you can offer.

Did you know?

  • 175,000 volunteers worked to prevent, prepare for and respond to nearly 64,000 disaster incidents last year.
  • Over 15 million Americans turn to us to learn CPR, first aid, swimming, and other health and safety skills. Last year, more than 230,000 people volunteered to teach those courses.
  • On an annual basis, half the nation's blood supply -- six million pints -- is collected by more than 190,000 Red Cross volunteers.
  • Volunteers are involved in the delivery of emergency messages to the men and women of the armed forces. A message is delivered every 22 seconds.
  • Over 24,000 volunteers serve as chairpersons on committees or members of boards of directors or advisory boards for local Red Cross chapters, military stations and blood services regions.

We think you’ll find volunteering with the American Red Cross to be one of the most rewarding experiences of your life.
