The Power of Two program is a partnership between the Public Relations Society of America and the American Red Cross. It provides a way for public relations experts to become involved in the Red Cross mission to provide relief to victims of disasters and help people prevent, prepare for and respond to emergencies. PRSA members are serving their communities as media spokespersons, communication strategists, writers and more. Some have become members of Rapid Response Teams, answering media questions during times of crisis. Others have taken a leave of absence from their daily responsibilities and deployed to provide public affairs support on large-scale disaster relief operations.
This is an opportunity for you to gain experience in disaster relief communication, and to earn maintenance credits for your APR credential. And, whether you volunteer for 2 hours, 2 days or 2 weeks, the Red Cross needs your public affairs expertise to tell the Red Cross story and to encourage a flow of the funding that provides help to people in need.
Named to show the energy that will be created by this partnership, The Power of Two offers a unique approach for PRSA members to be involved at different levels on the local and national level. Professional communicators will find a way to become involved with the Red Cross no matter how much time they can give. For example, PRSA members who can volunteer:
- two hours could assist the local Red Cross office with writing and pitching press releases, public service announcements, or making presentations throughout the year.
- two days could serve as media spokesperson during a disaster in their community or state.
- two weeks could travel to a disaster site to provide PR support for a large-scale disaster relief operation.
- only two times a year could provide expertise as a member of the Red Cross PR planning committee.
