Southern Nevada Red Cross Promotes Pool Safety – Prevent Drownings.

Lean more about what you can do to ensure your family’s safety.

As summer is approaching, the American Red Cross encourages all owners of swimming pools to be informed and make safety their priority this season.

Remember these simple tips for a great way to cool down in the water:

  • Learn to swim and swim well. Enroll kids in learn-to-swim courses offered at most public pools
  • Never leave small children unattended near water – not even the bathtub – not even for a moment! Adults should practice “reach supervision,” which means to always be within arm’s length when a child is near water in case of emergency.
  • Keep lifesaving gear handy. Always have on hand a lifejacket, rope, pole or other object that can be thrown to a person in trouble. Remember to have a first aid kit, cordless phone and emergency contact information by the pool.
  • Provide Supervision. Keep children under active supervision at all times. Designate a responsible person to watch the water when people are in the pool.
  • Eliminate temptation. Secure your pool with appropriate barriers. Surround your pool with a 4-feet high fence or barrier with a self-closing, self-latching gate that remain locked when the pool is not being used. Kiddie pools should be emptied and toys removed immediately after use.
  • Have warning signals. Consider installing a pool alarm that goes off if anyone enters the pool.
  • Establish and Enforce Rules. Safe behaviors such as “no diving,” “stay away from drain covers,” “swim with a buddy” and “walk please.”
