Fire Safety Checklist

There are many precautions you can take to improve your safety, from a fire, at home, school, and work. Always remember these safety precautions, and safety tips:

Ø      Smoke alarms save lives. Install a smoke alarm near your kitchen, on each level of your home, near sleeping areas, and inside and outside bedrooms if you sleep with doors closed. Use the test button to check it each month. Replace all batteries at least once a year. Having a working smoke alarm reduces the risk of dying in a home fire by nearly half.

Ø      Keep matches, lighters and other ignitable substances in a secured location out of the reach of children, and only use lighters with child-resistant features.

Ø      Practice your home fire escape plan with your family several times a year. Also practice stop, drop and roll and low crawling.

Ø      Familiarize children with the sound of your smoke alarm and what to do when they hear it.

Ø      Teach you children not be scared of firefighters. Take them to your local fire department to meet them and learn about fire safety.

American Red Cross wants you to be prepared for a fire within your home. Preparing now will save you from additional chaos, if a fire does occur. Here are some tips on how to be prepared:

Ø      PREPARE AN EMERGENCY KIT. Your kit should include but not be limited to: copies of personal documents, emergency contacts, a first aid kit, medications, non-perishable food, and water. You can also purchase an Adult, 3-day Emergency Preparedness Kit from www.RedCrossStore.org

Ø      Ensure your families safety during a fire by having two escape plans from every room. Remember NEVER open a door that is warm to the touch.

Ø      Move your plan-of-action outside your home. Establish two safe areas which your family will reconnect in safety.  Make sure one location is near your home, and determine another location outside of the neighborhood in case of an evacuation.

Ø      Don’t forget about your furry friends! If disaster strikes in or around your home, how will your pets be evacuated and cared for? Prepare a list of pet-friendly hotels, or family friends/relatives who are willing to pet-sit for the needed time.

Don’t let a fire take you by surprise. Start planning today.
